Calls for improved mental health data
Wednesday, 04 June 2008
A report calling for better data collection on the cost-effectiveness of mental health initiatives for children has been praised by a mental health charity.
Paula Lavis, policy and knowledge manager at YoungMinds, welcomed a report by health think-tank the King's Fund that singled out children and young adults as a priority area.
The report, Paying the Price: The Cost of Mental Health Care in England to 2026, said health research funding bodies should collect better data on the cost-effectiveness of mental health promotion and prevention initiatives to reduce further mental health problems.
It added that children and young adults should be a priority because childhood mental illness can lead to more problems later in life.
Lavis said: "Preventing people from getting mental health problems in the first place will have a dramatic effect on the cost impact."
The study said the costs for children's mental health problems were estimated to be £143m in 2007 and would rise to £237m by 2026.
