Books to be awarded for promoting mental health

By Lauren Higgs Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Books can help to improve the mental health of children and young people, according to the chief executive of mental health charity YoungMinds.

Sarah Brennan made the claim as she announced the annual YoungMinds book award was open for entries.

The award, which will be given to the book that best helps young people to cope with stress, is intended to promote good mental health and dispel taboos about mental illness.

Brennan said: "Books can help break the isolation felt by young people and demonstrate to them that their feelings and problems are not unique."

Young people will select a shortlist and a panel of adult judges will choose the winner, which will be announced in November.

Entries must have been published between 1 June 2007 and 31 May 2008.
