The members of trade unions Unison and PCS were protesting against a new pay structure and a pay deal they claimed to be below the rate of inflation. Unions said a wave of industrial action would follow the strike, including members working to contracted hours only and refusing to do overtime. Rallies will also be held in Manchester and London.
