Fpa sex education training expanded
Wednesday, 14 May 2008
Sexual health charity fpa is to extend its Speakeasy programme to Scotland after securing cash from the Big Lottery Fund.
Speakeasy is a free course giving parents and carers the skills to talk to young people about sex and relationships.
The £580,657 lottery grant means fpa can develop courses for 1,000 parents in Glasgow and Clyde, Tayside, Ayrshire and Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley.
The eight-week course covers contraception, sexually transmitted infections, peer pressure and sex and relationship education in school.
Audrey Simpson, director of fpa Scotland, said: "Parents want to speak to their children about sex and relationships, but don't know how to start, what to say or how to get over their embarrassment. Parents who have gone on Speakeasy tell us it makes a huge difference."
A Scottish peer education programme, helping parents to teach the course to other parents, is also in development.
