Scouts missing volunteer leaders as membership soars

By Tom Lloyd Monday, 21 April 2008

The Scout Association has been left with an increasing shortage of leaders after its largest membership rise for 22 years.

Over the last 12 months its youth membership has risen by 3.7 per cent, which amounts to 13,500 young people and brings the total to 450,000.

This has left the association with a shortfall of 6,400 adult volunteers, meaning there are now 32,000 young people registered to become Scouts who are currently unable to do so.

Chief Scout Peter Duncan said: "Our adult volunteers are what makes Scouting such a success, and without them there would be no Scout groups. We want to make it as easy as possible for adults to volunteer. It's vital that we keep recruiting volunteers."
