Separate register will not be created

Wednesday, 19 March 2008

The government has confirmed it will not create a separate children's social work register.

In a letter to the British Association of Social Workers, junior children's minister Kevin Brennan said the government had no plans to create separate registers for child and adult social workers.

Ian Johnston, chief executive of BASW, who raised concerns about having two registers in a letter to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, said he was pleased by the response.

He said social workers should not concentrate on one area: "Our view is that training should be general because there is movement between specialisms by social workers and they need to get broad training."
