Petition for cheap youth transport
Wednesday, 12 March 2008
A petition by youth work managers demanding cheaper public transport for young people is gaining support and gathering momentum.
The Association of Principal Youth and Community Officers (APYCO) petition, on the 10 Downing Street website, calls on Gordon Brown to set up a commission to consider the transport needs of teenagers. More than 200 people have now backed the petition.
A spokeswoman for APYCO said its members felt strongly that the recent introduction of free and cheaper transport for English pensioners should be replicated in the nation's app-roach to young people.
"Young people need to access services and positive activities," she said. "For many young people access is limited or prohibited as a result of the unavailability or cost of public transport.
"We therefore urge the government to set up a commission to look at how existing and additional resources, along with parental contributions, can be used to address this issue."
