Sports project to target disengaged
Wednesday, 17 October 2007
A multi-sports project for young people in Croydon is being launched by social inclusion programme Positive Futures.
The Football Foundation is providing £208,000 for the scheme and Nike has committed to providing basketball equipment.
The programme will target disengaged young people between the ages of 13 and 19, who are not already involved in youth clubs or similar initiatives, through outreach and detached youth work in the Selhurst and South Norwood areas of the London borough.
Local community venues will host classes including street dance, boxing, football, and basketball, and activities will take place in evenings and at weekends to encourage attendance. In the longer term the project will provide education and training opportunities for young people.
Gary Stannett, director of Positive Futures, said "the programme will focus on capacity building for individuals and the community".
Teenagers taking part in the project will be able to gain accredited sports leadership and PSHE qualifications, which will offer a route into National Youth Agency training.
