Shelter targets Bristol's under-16s

Wednesday, 05 September 2007

Shelter has launched a pioneering service to help homeless children and young people in Bristol, which it claims is the first of its kind.

The charity has created the Keys to the Future Bristol Children's Service to support homeless under-16s.

Over the next three years a dedicated team from the charity will work with Bristol City Council's housing department, children and young people's services and education and health departments to assess the needs of homeless children in the city.

The aim is to ensure children from homeless families do not become sidelined when housing decisions are made.

Sue Kelly, Keys to the Future Bristol Children's Service's manager, said homeless children suffer high levels of anxiety and often miss school, becoming "invisible" and their needs are not considered when housing decisions are made.
