Childcare Sector: Low pay 'puts off' male workers

The low pay and status associated with the childcare sector deters men from entering the profession, according to a report by the Equal Opportunities Commission.
The report highlighted the shortage of male childcare workers, and found that salaries in childcare were as much as 50 per cent lower than in sectors where the workforce was traditionally male.
Fewer than 10,000 men were working in childcare occupations in spring 2003, compared with 290,000 women.
