Shoesmith to give evidence in review of child protection
By Joe Lepper Friday, 10 September 2010
Haringey's former children's services director who lost her job over the Baby Peter case, is to give evidence to a parliamentary review into child protection issues.
Sharon Shoesmith is among a number of witnesses being called by the Education Select Committee, which is looking at the latest trends in safeguarding.
It is looking for views on issues such as the inspection of children's services, accountability and government safeguarding policy.
The meeting will take place on 15 September and will also hear evidence from children’s minister Tim Loughton and the children’s commissioner for England, Maggie Atkinson.
Shoesmith was removed from her post at Haringey by the then children’s secretary Ed Balls, amid a media furore over the death of Peter Connelly. She was later sacked.
The High Court rejected her legal challenge to her dismissal earlier this year, ruling it lawful.
Her application for a judicial review into her dismissal was also rejected but earlier this month a High Court judge granted her leave to appeal that decision.
