Voice project set to help trainees understand the impact of social work

By Stuart Derrick Thursday, 02 September 2010

Young people in care have helped develop a training programme that aims to give social work trainees a better appreciation of how their actions impact children.

The young people from Voice, a charity that empowers children and young people in care, took part in a project funded by the Children’s Workforce Development Council and the University of Bristol.

Working with Voice staff, 25 young people shared their perspectives on social work to help create two one-day training programmes, including training material and two films, Beyond the Stationery Cupboard… Into the Hood and Lost in Silence, Found a Voice. They were also coached as trainers to help deliver the programmes.

Salli Glover, a senior learning consultant at Voice, who helped develop the programme said: "A lot of universities attempt to involve young people in training but it can be quite chaotic as the can be angry about their experience, meaning they don't provide valuable insight."

Voice is looking to partner with more universities to deliver the programme and is also in talks with the Children's Rights Officers Association and the Children's Rights Alliance of England to discuss partnership opportunities.

The training programmes will be launched at an event on Monday 6 September.
