Torbay Council set to decide on cuts to children's services

By Ben Cook Wednesday, 25 August 2010

Torbay Council has proposed cutting nearly £200,000 from its children's services budgets.

The revised budgets have been submitted in a report to the local authority’s overview and scrutiny board for consideration. Councillors on the board are expected to make a decision on whether to approve the cuts at a meeting today.

The proposals include cutting £69,000 from literacy and numeracy support services, as well as slashing £30,000 from the budget for training school support staff and providing study support for young people.

The council is also aiming to save £50,000 by transferring Learning and Skills Council staff to the local authority and not filling a vacant post. They have suggested cutting a further £10,000 from administrative support for the council's youth services.

According to the report, a total of £484,000 of funding from the Play Builder programme is also "under threat".
