Young people to have say on cuts
Tuesday, 06 July 2010
Leicester City Council is bringing together a group of young people to ensure they are consulted on any cuts that may affect them.
The Generation Select project will see a select committee led by young people focus on the themes of budgets and potential threats to youth provision.
"It involves calling chief executives and chief finance officers to give evidence to young people," said Bez Killeen, active involvement youth worker at Leicester. Killeen is also hoping to get the UK Youth Parliament involved in the project.
Leading figures in the youth sector have recently raised concerns that youth participation could be reduced as councils make tough decisions about youth services budgets. Councils have been urged to make the most of youth participation when making cuts to ensure they protect services that meet local needs.
