Teens 'hanging around' seen as antisocial behaviour

By Joe Lepper Friday, 25 June 2010

A third of residents living in Youth Crime Action Plan areas believe that teenagers "hanging around" is in itself antisocial behaviour, according to a new government survey.

Older residents were the most likely to consider hanging around as antisocial.

The survey of those living in these designated areas of high antisocial behaviour also found that a quarter of residents feared for their personal safety when they saw teenagers in a group during the daytime.

When walking past teenagers in a group at night, half of residents said they feared for their safety.

The most common causes for antisocial behaviour, according to residents in Youth Crime Action Plan areas, were a lack of things for them to do and poor parenting.

When asked to rank the most significant problems in their community, teenagers hanging around and litter were the top concerns. Abandoned cars and noisy neighbours were the least significant worries.
