By , Tuesday 20 February 2007

Thousands of children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder aren't being spotted because NHS Scotland is not equipped to diagnose the condition.

Research suggests one in 100 babies suffer from the disorder, suggestingthat there are 8,000 affected children aged up to 16 in Scotland. But,to date, no children in Scotland have been formally diagnosed with thedisorder, which affects children whose mums drink during pregnancy.

A coalition of charities and experts, including Children in Scotland, last week called on the Government to develop a test for the disorder. They say identifying the disorder is crucial for co-ordinating medicaltreatment and delivering services.
