The London Borough of Hounslow has good safeguarding and looked-after children services, according to its latest Ofsted inspection.

The report found that the local authority had cleared a backlog of cases highlighted in an unannounced inspection in June. It said services to identify and help children and young people who need safeguarding were effective and staff were well-trained.

Inspectors said early intervention services were highly successful in preventing breakdown in family relationships.

Lin Davies, lead member for children’s services at the council, said: "The horrific case of Baby Peter brought this work into the public eye like never before, so it’s important to have independent assurance that all the agencies in Hounslow are working together so well."

She added: "Most of us would struggle to even comprehend the kinds of cases social workers deal with in their day-to-day work, so it’s important we show them our appreciation."
