London Borough of Haringey

Haringey is a special place to work and live. Over 224,000 people live in 11.5 square miles, a quarter of which are children and young people under the age of 20. There is a growing population of children and young people, and almost half of them speak English as an additional language. Many face particular challenges as a result of their personal circumstances. We want to ensure they get support and enjoy the same opportunities as any other child and young person in the borough.

Employment opportunities

We offer many benefits and opportunities to practitioners and social workers. We need people who can offer specialist skills in legal planning, looked after children, assessment and children's safeguarding. Our teachers have a real commitment to work in partnership with the local community. We aim to recruit dynamic teachers and leaders in education. Haringey will soon be home to a new sixth form centre, which is one of the most exciting developments in post-16 education nationally.

Best practice

Our social care branch has fully embraced information technology and the Integrated Children's System. We are implementing locality-based multi-disciplinary children's networks that will deliver early intervention and family support services. We have secured £161.68m of Government funds through the Building Schools for the Future project. We have celebrated Ofsted success over the last year, with several schools praised for their sustained improvement.

Employment policy

We seek to recruit and retain practitioners, social workers, teachers and leaders who will thrive on the challenge of working with children and young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. We are committed to reflecting the full diversity of the community we serve and to promoting equality of opportunity for everyone.

Learning and career development

We offer a high level of staff support and development, including caseload
weighting, regular supervision and appraisal and ongoing opportunities for training and development, including post-qualification training. Our Professional Development Centre provides an extensive programme of training and development for the whole school workforce in Haringey. We also work in conjunction with other boroughs and local universities to help people enter the teaching professions.

Salary and benefits

We offer a comprehensive range of staff benefits, including flexible working arrangements and mobile phones for all our frontline social care staff. Our salary and benefits package is among the best in London with social work salaries starting from £28,084, and going up to £37,636. Although defined as an outer London borough, we pay our teachers on the inner London pay scale. Newly qualified teachers earn a minimum of £23,577. We work closely with local housing associations to assist teachers in buying their own homes.

The future

We have set some ambitious goals for the coming years. Through a series of
consultation events with children and young people, parents, professionals, schools, the voluntary and statutory sectors and the wider community in Haringey, we have tasked ourselves to meet a set of key priorities. Above all, we want all vulnerable children and young people to get support to enjoy the same opportunities as any other child or young person.
