Education secretary Ruth Kelly has accepted a review that backs the greater use of synthetic phonics, a system in which children learn the sound of letters before they are exposed to books.

But the National Union of Teachers warned that synthetic phonics may not suit all children's learning styles. General secretary Steve Sinnott said: "There must be a range of strategies to hand. Without that, a teacher will be constrained in teaching a child who is struggling to cope with phonics."
